Hue For Everyman: The Review

31 Oct

Product and Purpose

When I speak to people about pomades, the general consensus is that brands vary based on it’s designed purpose.   In other words, if you have 4 different brands,  they are usually formulated with particular hairstyles or hair-types in mind.  Despite the segmented nature of the hair care and skin market; Hue For Everyman is serving the needs of many,  with one premium pomade.

Up until now, no pomade brand has ever designed one product to serve the needs of Africans, Asians, Latins and Middle Easterns at the same time. Hue For Everyman is changing the hair market while addressing needs of many.

Hue’s formula of all natural ingredients, is as unique as it’s purpose. While most pomades are comprised of mostly artificial ingredients, Hue’s formula consist of all natural ingredients that protects the quality of hair.  No Silicones, No Parabens, and No Petroleum.  This formula is comprised of mango, shea butter, argon oil, and primrose oil all ingredients promote optimal hydration and conditioning.

Behind the Chair Review

The first thing you notice is obviously the packaging, as a premium product it definitely looks the part. Next, what you notice is the light yet noticable fragrance, it is sure to compliment any cologne you or client  may choose. This pomade itself is not thick or stiff, which isn’t the case with many pomades. This pomade can be effortlessly scooped up and be applied in the hair with a comb. When you comb or brush it through the hair, you’ll find that it applies evenly, quickly and easily without any heavy clumps. What makes it’s even better is that it washes off of your hands effortlessly.

After taking a few weeks to sample the product along with few customers and barbers, the feed back is definitely positive. So positive, that I almost got jacked for my own sample. That says something.  This isn’t a single purpose pomade, it is a conditioner that stand up to a long day of demands and even holds well in unrelenting Florida humidity.  This product can last for days in wave-length hair cut or comb-over hairstyles. It washes out easily and doesn’t strip the hair of moisture or nutrients.  ByBarbers4Barbers strong recommends this product..

2013 Premiere Orlando Beauty Show

After much anticipation over the years, I finally made it to the 2013 Premiere Expo in Orlando, Fl.  It is without a doubt one of the largest expos that one can attend in any industry.   With hundreds of vendors and thousand of patrons in attendence from all over the country, this event is something to see.  Every isle was as packed as a Midtown Manhattan street. Everyone was there with rolling suitcases and bags of goodies. The bargains alone, are reason enough to make this trip.  This annual event is held at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC), the second largest convention center in the U.S.,  only second to the McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. The who’s who of the beauty and barbering industry make it a point to come to this huge event.

Even though this was event was primarily a beauty show, there were plenty of  exhibits, events and vendors to keep us interested. All of the clipper manufactures had their showcase barbers leading classes, seminars and demonstrations. In addition, plenty of our favorite vendors were in attendance like Da Gauge, Major League Barbers, HQ Elements, Bookyourbarber.com and many many more.

Being able to see all of the latest clippers from every manufacturer,  under one roof, was  one of  my favorite parts of the event. I got to ask all of the questions,  a clipper geek like myself could think of. All of the representatives from Andis, Oster, Babyliss Pro, and Wahl, had very knowledgable and enthusiastic representatives. Lithium Ion powered cordless clippers and trimmers is a  upcoming trend among the manufacturers. Many of these lithium powered clippers are light, ergonomic and are as powerful as traditional clippers.  It was a pleasant surprise. There will be some welcomed competition among the Big 4 soon.

The best part of the show was meeting other barbers, who in many ways, were willing to sacrifice their time at the shop to attend. Networking among other barbers who in addition to cutting hair, are also interested in expanding their interest to beyond the barber chair. I’m definitely planning to travel to a few shows in the near future.

Barber Profile: Lawrence The barber

Whenever we have downtime in our barbershop, we love to browse Instagram. One of boys at the shop,  put me on to a barber who I thought only customizes and paints Andis Masters Clippers.  When you look a little deeper, you realize that not only is this guy an awesome barber, but he also is very much into the history and culture of barbering. He collects all sort of antique clippers, documents like barber union licenses ( I bet you didn’t know they existed), many figurines, and countless artifacts.   Every now and then I find a topic,  that reminds me of why I started this blog in the first place.  Something that gets me excited. Something that draws my interest. Most of all, something that warrants a post on bb4b. This is definitely worth checking out.

Update:The barber’s photographer, Rob Hammer, wants to shoot 50 Barbershops from 50 States in the USA.

19 Nov

I recently posted a story on the commercial photographer Rob Hammer, and his project to shoot 50 barbershops in 50 states. (Check out the post here if you are unfamiliar.) Since making this post, the scope and purpose of this project has grown while gaining much momentum.  In addition to documenting his photos in a book, he has also decided to film his experiences in a documentary to submit to several film festivals.   In order to fund his project,  he submitted his project to kickstarter.com to bring his project to fruition. Please Check out his post kickstarter page for more info and to help fund his project.

Barbershop Skit: When customers cheat on their barbers.

27 Sep

As barbers,  I’m sure that everyone can relate to this skit. The relationship between the barber and client be a precarious one, to say the least. Enjoy. Check out dormtaintment.com for more hilarious videos.

The barber’s photographer, Rob Hammer, wants to shoot 50 Barbershops from 50 States in the USA.

14 May

The barbershop is one of society’s most constant staples in the human experience. As a staple that transcends race, social-economic status, political views and lifestyles; the barbershop is the perfect setting to capture a unique story.

It’s true, a picture does tells a thousand words. The pictures that Rob Hammer takes tells the story of a dying league of barbers.  Barbers that had something to say,  a story to tell. The type of  barbers whose characters were defined and shaped by their life experiences, and not contrived by tweets or status updates.   These are the same barbers that cared more about serving the same communities, that we are removed from today.  Yes, a dying breed indeed.

To pay homage to this dying breed and inspire the new generation of barbers today, Rob Hammer is currently working on project and would like your help.  He has plans to go to each state in the U.S.  and shoot one barbershop in each state.  He wants to shoot shops that are pure, unique,  and enduring; old school shops with character and a story to tell. He then plans to create a book documenting his photos, stories and experiences in each state; to give insight to the barbers that we will soon loose forever. So, if you know of any shops that fit the mold and characteristics that Rob is looking for, please contact him with the links below. In the meantime,  check out his samples and website.

Barber Commentary: Barbering app??? “The Barber Game is to be sold and not told”, what do you think?

23 Mar

One of the barbers that I work with, told me about  the Pacino’s app.   Pacino’s, is the brain child of celebrity barber and wahl educator Eric Pacino aka Pacino the Barber, a fifteen year vet  who has in impressive A-list cliental. The iPhone and android app that gives step by step instructions on how to do the latest hairstyles.  While some barbers would be excited to get pointers, not all barbers feel the same way. My fellow barber ( who will remain nameless) said, “Yo, the game is to be sold and not told. I had to learn this the hard way. This dude is gonna teach everyone, and then everyone will know the game , cheapen the trade, and make it harder for us to eat. Look at what happened to hip hop”. I said, ” The game is sold right, he’s selling the app isn’t it he?”  He replied, ” for 99 cent, it’s damn near free”.

First  of all, always do you research, the app is actually $9.99 on iTunes and Android Market place. I say that to say this… While the game is to be sold, understand there will always be buyers and there will always be sellers. There are millions of people joining new industries, in hopes of becoming a professional and barbering is no exception.  So, stay on top of your game, while keeping in mind that competition in barbering is relentless.  Don’t slack. Don’t Sleep. Don’t take your clientele for granted, because they have more options then you think.  As long as you are professional, work with passion, build relationships and master your craft; you won’t have anything to worry about.  My collegue falls in this category, but one could understand why he feels threatened. While my colleague’s point is poignant and  is likely shared by others,  I have to say that I don’t share the same presumption. The purpose of this blog other and other websites is to promote the trade, the craft, and the culture of barbering. Barbering might introduce a youngster to the profession, that gives him a reason to stay off of streets. With the jobless rate around 9-10%, barbering might give a parent who is down on their luck, renewed hope and a way to provide for their family.  Barbering might give a parolee a way to earn his place back in society and be a productive citizen in the world.

Barbering is the reason why you’re reading this post, and it’s the reason why i’m typing it. While considering that $9.99 is the price of the app, barbering with all that it can do for one’s life is priceless.  So, if you’re an experienced barber,  teach who wants to learn and pass on the knowledge.  You might be doing more then you think.  If the game is to be sold, and not told; i’ll break the rule this time and go against the grain.. Shout out to Pacino, bloggers, video bloggers, and websites that genuinely promote the culture. #barberlife #barberlove #barbergang

Represent: Drew The Barber

6 Dec

This represent segment is about Drew The Barber, he’s 23  years old and hails from Edison, New Jersey.  Personally, as a barber who has been cutting for 16 years in which of those years were 10 professionally, i’m always impressed by barbers who accomplish the same in less time.   Drew the Barber is no exception to the rule, with producing haircuts of this quality with only 6 years experience. Yes 6 years.  Drew says that he was inspired by his friends that were barbers, and decided to follow suit.  Picking good company, has served as smart  decision by Drew, based on his success thus far.  His website, is one of the best websites that we’ve seen from a barber.. That says a lot. It’s complete with a bio, haircuts, video, blog and links to many widgets.  Check out his website for more info.

These videos are the embodiment of every barbershop. It doesn’t matter the race, economic status, or social status; all shops serve the same purpose that’s depicted In this short film.

Being a barber comes with it’s privileges, blessing, opportunities and the occasional frustrations. In all, there’s nothing like it. It feels good to watch the kids grow, see boys grow into men, all while building with your peers.

These videos are among my favorites. Enjoy!

Is the High-Top Fade, the new Mowhawk???

3 May

Is it just me, or are you seeing more High-Top Fades? I guess it goes hand in hand with the snap-backs and hipster looks. In the last few years I’ve done more mohawks then I can count, so it’s a welcomed change.

While the mohawk is still a popular haircut, it’s a important to be one step ahead. Every good barbers knows how to stay relevant in their skill set. Being proactive rather than reactive, helps to keep you ahead of the curve. Pay attention and look out for the next big thing. You may have to do a high-top fade sooner than think.  Check out the photos and videos to use as reference points.  Remember, be unique, be original, and represent.

Represent: Jason Macaraig AKA Jmac

16 Apr

Through blogging, I’m starting to understand Canadian barbers, really do their thing. It’s not disrespect, it’s more like paying respect. I always get excited when I see barbers really represent and make a name for themselves.  As a barber myself, it serves as an inspiration and gives me insight as to what is possible.  Jmac, among other barbers, help  us to expand our horizons and encourage us to promote ourselves in more dynamic ways.

Jason Macaraig aka Jmac, a  Toronto native, has been cutting hair for 13 years.  Over the years Jmac has taken full advantage of his opportunites, and made a good name for himself, by displaying skills for all to see.  He has cut hair for a list of celebrities that includes, Large Professor, Nas, J Cole, Mack Maine, Trey Songz, and Lil Twist to name a few.  Now, Jmac has achieved notority that is unimaginable by most, as the official barber for Drake.  Now Jmac’s work can be seen nationally through endless ad campaigns from Sprite to Kodak and magazine covers like GQ, Fader, and many more.

Jmac has built his own brand called, “Get Faded”.  He says, “Get Faded is a train of thought, comprised of pristine etiquette, representing the distinguished gentleman.”  He has recently launched his website along with a series of teasers to promote his brand.  I get the impression that this will only be the begining for Jmac.  Please check out Jmac’s videos and his website, they are amazing.

Don’t ever let anyone or anything stop you from doing what you love to do. Happiness over Success- Jmac
